Core Values

2010
03.30

All of Us > Some of Us – We believe that God has called all of his people to restore and redeem a broken world.  The church is not a building we gather in but a family we become a part of.  Not so we can be served, but so that we can use our God given talents and gifts to change our community.

One of the best experiences in my life was being part of a mission trips with a group of middle school students. At the beginning of the trip each of the kids awkwardly got together to listen to the instructions of a local who instructed them in the work we would be doing for that week. The task was to reclaim a block from disrepair and restore a sense of ownership back into the community.  You could see the looks of disbelief grow on the kids’ faces as they began to understand the enormity of the task. They began to doubt and question themselves. I can’t clean this much stuff! There is no way we can get this done! But as you probably suspect, the kids accomplished all of this and more. They discovered the power that can be unleashed when everyone contributes. They discovered that when they serve others they really gain more than they give. They discovered that partnering with people different than them is strange at first and unforgettable by the end.

The funny thing is that at the end of these trips I can always see the change in students. The girl who was so self absorbed becomes the girl who gives her favorite 100 dollar sweater to a homeless lady. The guy who never says a word shares a faith story that moves everyone.  And even though these trips are spent without hot showers, TV, or a host of other things, everyone always thinks they end too soon.

Anyone who has been on a mission trip knows what I’m talking about. The only problem is that we wait until we’re hundreds of miles away from home to experience this life. If you look at the early church what you see is a group of people that lived this out in the context of everyday life. Church wasn’t just listening to a great speaker or hearing a great band and then going home thinking that was it. Sure worship and teaching were and are an important part of our expression of faith. But it can’t end there. God has gifted all of us in ways that demand we use those gifts.

So many stories of people coming to know Jesus start with the words, “I never really thought much about God until somebody…” Finish the sentence in a million ways. Was my friend when no else would be, fixed my car when I didn’t have the money, helped me get a job when I’d looked everywhere. God has given each of us something we can use for Gods glory and to restore and redeem a broken world.

Here at The Avenue Church we will be people that never gets so caught up in some of us that all of us aren’t contributing. We will be people that learn from, encourage, and give to each other. We will be people that recognize the God-given value in everyone and help everyone find a way to contribute.

How have you seen this value played out in your life or in situations around you?

Yesterday we had a great worship time @ the Old Louisville coffee shop

We focused in on 2 stories – The Palm Sunday story in John 12 & Nehemiah 2:11 – end of the chapter

Here are the highlights – Launch team you will receive the video this week:

  • Nehemiah’s saw the reputation of God was at stake
  • Are we really aware of how deeply the name & renown of God is at stake in our culture & how far are we willing to go to repair it
  • Nehemiah’s toughest task was not personal sacrifice it was asking others to join him in that sacrifice
  • That is the task of our launch team – To share the vision & invite others to join us
  • Our fear is that everyone loves the celebration (palm Sunday but no one loves the road to Gethsemane or Calvary)
  • Our task is to work hard, to commit to the vision & to do the hard work of becoming the change we wish to see

We are asking the launch team to step it up (here is what we need)

  1. Commit to be here every week – Make the Avenue Church your priority – We need you each week because what we are discussing is important for future events
  2. Consider joining one of our leadership teams – Teams include – Serve team – University team – Fund raising team – Communications team (use your leadership to help out on these teams)
  3. Join a learning community sign ups start next week - (Learning communities will meet on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday nights and one early morning weekday)  They will include a study on basic theology, basic apologetics, a study of Acts and one additional study.  These studies will prepare us to engage the culture we are moving into.
  4. Pray for who is going to be invited to your home group – We are asking each launch team member to start a home group in August are you praying over who to invite to the Avenue church & to be a part of this church.
  5. Join The Avenue Street Team - We need your help raising the money needed to make our dreams reality.  Street team meetings on Tuesday March 30 5:30 Pm @ offices or April 15th 5:30 PM

The Avenue Residency Program

Training next generation leaders to create a movement of transformation and multiplication in their community and around the world.

When we started dreaming about our church, we knew we wanted it to be a place of serving, training and sending. One product of that dream is The Avenue Residency Program. This program is for anyone who is interested in growing their faith, developing a strong theological foundation or going into full-time ministry. In one academic year students will experience missional living, gain a quality spiritual education, obtain hands on ministry experience, go on an international and local missions trip and rub shoulders with some of the most respected and influential ministers and scholars in our region.

The Avenue Residency Program will help develop people who want to impact their world with a passion for the gospel and a love for people. The curriculum and educational philosophy will be unique—both practical and academic. We offer three levels to our residency program, each offering a unique perspective on missional living and ministry.

 1. The Intern level is for college age students who are interested in growing their faith and developing a strong spiritual and theological foundation. Some students consider this a “gap year” and enter the program directly out of high school in order to provide a strong spiritual foundation prior to going off to college. These students may or may not be called to full time ministry. The aim of the Intern level is education.

 2. The Apprentice is a post college student who feels they are being called to ministry, but may not know exactly what that looks like. The apprentice level provides exposure to many different areas of ministry including Family Ministry, Worship/Programming, Church Planting, Foreign Missions, Spiritual Formation, Discipleship/Adult Ministries, Local Missions and Leadership. The aim of the Apprentice level is exposure.

 3. The Protégé is an individual who has been called to ministry and has developed a clear sense of that calling. The protégé must be able to clearly articulate the vision of the ministry area to which they are called and provide a strong understanding of biblical doctrine. Partnering with The New Thing Network, this level is also for ministers who feel they are being called to church planting. The aim of the protégé level is experience.

Announcing Project 28:19

2010
03.18

What is Project 28:19?

As believers we share a calling… no matter where you go, what you do… do it as ambassadors of Jesus… teaching His way, sharing His gifts and extending His kingdom.  We have felt the call to do that in Old Louisville.  We are going that we may heal the broken, free the afflicted and raise the name of Jesus Christ above any other… and we’d love for you, wherever you are and whatever you do, to be a part of that.

Right now there are over 30,000 people under the age of 30 at the University of Louisville & Old Louisville who are not attending a church.  53% of University of Louisville students say they did not have a conversation about God in the last year.  No church is currently reaching more than 1% of the University students on any given week. Old Louisville is the youngest neighborhood in the city it is among the city’s poorest & Louisville’ 4th district has more violent crime than any other neighborhood in the city.  Project 28:19 is an initiative of the Avenue Community Church to reverse these numbers and bring renewal to the city and the people.

Where Did the Name Project 28:19 Come From?

Project 28:19 is taken from Matthew 28:19: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

His Work > Our Work

2010
03.16

His Work > Our Work – We believe our lives are too small of a thing to give ourselves to.  We have looked for success everywhere but God and found nothing but emptiness.  We believe the true fulfillment is not found in our own ambitions & selfish goals but is found when we fully embrace God’s plan for our lives.

 So what does this mean?

First we look at what fulfillment in our own ambitions and goals is and what it leads to. Most people find themselves in one of two places when it comes to achieving success. The first is there are some people who achieve everything they set out to do. They get into the school they want, they get the job they want, they get the promotion, the house, the car, and the expense account. But the same story comes up time and time again. After awhile, it stops bringing meaning. The promotion is great but three months later the shine wears off. The new house is amazing but a year later it’s just a house. And people get stuck in a cycle where they keep trying to find meaning in their goals and their goals bring only temporary and short lived relief. After a while people stop believing in fulfillment or they spend their whole life chasing it in different places only to come up empty.

The second place people find themselves is never achieving their dreams. The school rejects your application. The job doesn’t happen. The loan doesn’t get approved. You buy the ring and she says no. You try for years to have kids and it just doesn’t happen.  And what starts out as frustration and disappoint leads to giving up on life and God. And you wind up feeling empty.

In both cases, people are left thinking there has to be more to life than this. And there is! God has so much more planned for us than we can ever dream. But a part in everyone’s story that discovers this is that there comes a time when we stop pursuing our own way of life and start pursuing God.

The Avenue Church is a place where we are committed to making sure God and his work in us and through us are what we focus on. We’ve seen and felt the pain and emptiness from trying to pursue a life of our own goals and plans. We see that we are most fulfilled in life when God is at the center of our hopes and dreams. And so here in Old Louisville and with the people and students of the colleges and universities we want people to discover and embrace what Jesus meant when he said, “I have come to give them life to the fullest.” (John 10:10) Through the partnerships with college students, the outreach to the community, and the building of meaningful lives we exist to create a city where the overflow of God in us changes everything around us and people understand and embrace what life truly is.
